Sciatica is pain that starts in the lower back and runs through the buttock and down the leg, sometimes all the way to the foot. It usually happens when a nerve root in the lower spine is irritated or compressed, and it often comes with tingling, burning or an electric-shock feeling along the leg.
It is very uncomfortable, but in a good share of cases it improves with well-guided conservative care. Dr. Sosa listens to how your pain behaves, checks your strength, reflexes and sensation, and orders an X-ray or MRI only when it adds something to your care.
Her role in sciatica is evaluation and non-surgical treatment. If your exam shows warning signs or a case that needs a surgical opinion, she will tell you clearly.

Cost of your visit
You are seen at Dr. Sosa’s office at Torre Millenium, in the Altabrisa area of Mérida. We tell you the cost of the consultation — and of any procedure or study you need — when you book, and it is generally lower than in the US or Canada. If you are visiting Mérida, let us know your travel dates so we can fit everything into your stay.
Dr. Sosa does not work with insurance companies: payment is made directly at the office, by cash, credit or debit card, or bank transfer.
After your visit
Recovery from sciatica is different for everyone and depends on the cause. In many cases the pain improves gradually over weeks with consistent conservative care, while some cases take longer. Follow-up matters: the treatment is adjusted as you respond, exercises are stepped up as the pain allows, and warning signs are watched for. Dr. Sosa will not promise an exact timeline, but she will give you an honest plan and review your progress with you.
Frequently asked questions
Will sciatica go away on its own?
In many cases it improves with conservative care and time, but not in all. An evaluation helps rule out causes that need more active treatment, and helps relieve the pain while you recover.
Will I need surgery?
Most cases of sciatica do not require surgery. Non-invasive options such as physical therapy and pain management come first. Surgery is reserved for cases that do not respond or that show specific warning signs — and that can only be defined after a complete evaluation.
Do I need an MRI?
Not always. Often the diagnosis is guided by your history and the physical exam. An X-ray or MRI is ordered when it really adds to your care, not automatically. If you already have one, you can send it on WhatsApp before your visit.
Should I rest completely or keep moving?
Prolonged bed rest is usually not the best option. In general the aim is to stay somewhat active within what the pain allows and to return to movement progressively with the right exercises, adjusted to your case.
When should I seek urgent care?
Seek medical attention right away if you have leg weakness that is getting worse, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the groin area — these can be warning signs. Otherwise, if the pain does not ease in several days or interferes with your daily life, it is worth an evaluation.
